Abstract
Specific-heat measurements of a number of dilute Pt-Co and Pt-Mn alloys are presented. The results are compared with the results of the corresponding Pd-based alloys and are analysed in terms of model calculations. The model used is the Weiss molecular-field model with a distribution of g values artificially incorporated. From the fit of the model calculations to the data a magnetic moment of 4μ B per Co atom in Pt is found, which is close to the measured moment. For Mn in Pt-Mn a value of 2.6μ B is predicted. This (unrealistic) small value is attributed to the fact that Pt-Mn was recently found not to be ferromagnetic, though the specific heat vs. temperature curves can be described very well by the model.
