Abstract

The enhancement of the coefficients gamma of the linear term in the specific heat of amorphous Fe90-xCoxZr10 alloys for x or=30 has been interpreted in terms of large contributions of the projected density of states of Fermi electrons at the Fe and Co sites arising from the lack of much structure in the density of states of the 3d electrons in the disordered amorphous structure of these alloys. From the evaluated density of states one expects a change from a weak ferromagnet (according to the Stoner criterion) to a strong one around x=20. The magnetic contributions result from the magnetic inhomogeneous structure of these alloys at the atomic scale as shown by recent Mossbauer and NMR studies.
