Abstract

The thermal decomposition of CoOOH in a LiNO 3 melt is a new route for the preparation of a mixed lithium-cobalt spinel oxide with the composition Li 0.35Co 2.65O 4. TEM-, DTA- and DTG-measurements are consistent with a topotactic model of CoOOH decomposition preceded by partial ion-exchange between H + from CoOOH and Li + from the LiNO 3 melt. It has been shown that the lithium ions are distributed nearly statistically in the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel lattice.
