Abstract

Austenitic Stainless Steel—ASS has excellent corrosion resistance. Therefore, it plays an important role in many industrial and manufacturing sector. However, its application was limited by its low hardness and wear resistant behavior. Low temperature plasma nitriding is one of appropriate surface treatment techniques for improving its properties. In this paper, plasma nitriding of austenitic stainless steel was carried out using by high dense RF-DC plasma nitriding. Nitriding temperature hold at 400 °C, whereas nitriding athmosphere was a gas mixture of 70% N2: 30% H2. Nitriding times was varied for 7.2, 1.44 and 28.8 ks. Nitrided specimens were investigated through micro-hardness measurement and X-ray diffraction analysis.
