Abstract

The heat capacity of prascodymium dihydride PrH2.00 was measured over the temperature range 23 to 342 K by adiabatic calorimetry. At T = 298.15 K the measured heat capacity at constant pressure Cp, the entropy So, the enthalpy {Ho(T) − Ho(0)} and the function −{Go(T) − Ho(0)}/T are: 9.83 calth K−1 mol−1, 13.57 calth K−1 mol−1, 1832 calth mol−1, and 7.42 calth K−1 mol−1 respectively. The influence of a crystal field of cubic symmetry on the splitting of the ground state 3H4 of the praseodymium ion Pr3+ was analysed, and the conclusion was drawn that the triplet Γ5 is the lowet lying level which supports the anionic-like character (hydridic model) of hydrogen in this hydride.
