Abstract

The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility for binary compounds with the RCu 6 — type structure has been systematically investigated to discuss structural instabilities, transport and magnetic properties. The Pr, Nd, Sm, and Gd-containing compounds reveal a typical Curie-Weiss paramagnetism of free rare earth ions at high temperatures, while magnetic order at low temperature for the Nd, Sm, and Gd compounds is evidenced by a rapid drop in electrical resistivity and a cusp in magnetic susceptibility measurements. A superconducting transition is observed in ThCu 6 at about 0.2 K. Neither magnetic order nor superconductivity is seen in LaCu 6 and CeCu 6 above 60 mK. In addition, the system ( Ce 1− x Pr x ) Cu 6 is compared and contrasted to the system ( Ce 1− x La x ) Cu 6.
