Abstract

A model is proposed for the metal-dielectric transition under pressure with the formation of a dielectric gap of the Mott-Hubbard type because of stabilization of an orbitally ordered state with the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in a narrow doubly degenerate conductivity band, allowing for broadening of the latter under compression. A cluster approach is used choosing two neighboring lattice sites as the cluster. The results of the calculation are compared with experimental data on the electric conductivity of Jahn-Teller orbitally ordered crystals.
