Abstract

ABSTRACTLow‐profile designs of meta‐based antennas are proposed for wideband circular polarization in this letter. Metamaterial structures of reactive impedance surface (RIS) and mushroom‐like structures are utilized, respectively, both of which have rectangular metallic unit cells. The metamaterial structures are simply fed by a microstrip feed line through a slot etched on the ground. The rectangular unit cells provide the 90° phase difference for the equivalent orthogonal modes from the 45°‐rotated slot to yield circular polarization. The measured results show that the antenna with RIS has an effective band of 10.7% (5.37–5.98 GHz) for |S11| < −10 dB, AR < 3 dB and average gain of 6 dBic on a low profile of 0.05λ0. The antenna with mushroom structures has an effective band of 10.4% (5.46–6.06 GHz) for |S11| < −10 dB, AR < 3 dB and average gain of 7 dBic. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
