Abstract

As a challenging mechatronics development, a reaction wheel equipped with a five-axis active magnetic bearing and a digital controller is described in this paper. It provides a number of interesting advantages over ball bearing wheels to meet the requirements for next generation satellites. In general, they allow high-speed operation with minimum loss torque. In addition, a five-axis active controlled magnetic bearing allows online balancing of the flywheel mass leading to substantially less micro-vibrations. A controller based on a Digital Signal Processor has been developed and was tested with an 87 Nms wheel prototype. The design principles and relevant test results regarding the active suppression of micro-vibrations are presented.
