Abstract
Cosmic-string properties are studied in the framework of the minimal extension of the standard electroweak theory with an extra U(1) symmetry. Provided certain critical minimum values are exceeded, currents can be trapped in a $W$-boson condensate within the vortex core, giving a behavior qualitatively similar to that in the simplified U(1) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} U(1) Witten model.
