Abstract

In the United States in the 1960's, early childhood programs were directed toward the education of both the poor child and the parent. Mothers were involved as volunteers in the classroom and participated in weekly group meetings. Some classrooms were staffed by a qualified teacher and a mother trained as she worked. High school equivalency and college programs further provided opportunities for low‐income mothers to move into the professional ranks.
