Abstract

An electrical circuit is described which allows an X–Y recorder to be used as a function generator or process controller. A small optical sensor placed in the pen position is used to track a black–white curve edge used in place of the normal graph paper on the recorder. As the sensor tracks the edge, the associated circuit gives an electrical voltage proportional to the curve height. The device has proven useful in the generation of nonanalytical or unusual functions for analog computation and can also be used in control applications.
