Abstract

Measurements have been made of the re-emission of deuterium, previously implanted into a carbon target, by protons of the same energy for ion energies of between 50 eV and 1 keV. The results can be explained in terms of a ‘gas sputtering cross section’, as in previous higher energy work. However, the production of hydrogen deuteride is found to be important for calculations of the magnitudes of such cross sections. In addition, the hydrogen deuteride emission starts low, rises to a peak and finally decays during proton bombardment. This is in contrast to the experimental decay ofthe deuterium re-emission, and provides evidence as to the mechanism of the ion induced re-emission process. This work forms part of a study of Plasma Recycling via the walls in tokamaks.
