Shirley Institute Didsbury Manchester M20 8RXPresented at the 13th Congress of the International Federation of Associations of Textile Chemists and Colourists in London on 21 September 1984.Surveys of current practice show that energy requirements for fabric preparation range between Wand 30 GJ for each tonne of fabric processed. The procedure recommended in this paper consumes as little as 3.4 GJ/tonne. The process depends upon steam purging loom‐state fabric prior to the fabric entering the preparation liquor, and combining the three separate stages of desizing, scouring and bleaching into a single‐stage process. Acceptable preparation of cotton fabrics can be obtained by batching such impregnated fabric at room temperature, followed by washing‐off and drying.
