Abstract

Patients who have had a first episode of unprovoked venous thromboembolism are at high risk for recurrence once anticoagulation is discontinued. Long-term treatment with vitamin K antagonist can be very effective, but it is associated with major risks, resulting in limited treatment regimen from 3 to 6 months after the event.
