Abstract

It is disappointing to note that pathetic Slum settlements meet the housing needs of a substantial urban population in large metro cities in countries like India. They have grown beyond management due to widespread poverty, rising prices of accommodation and inadequate housing bank loan and land development systems. Governments have failed miserably in controlling these slums although they have tried to provide alternative settlements. Yet the problems continue. The solution lies in providing affordable and sustainable solutions. This paper discusses the current status of low-cost low-income mass housing in India based on interaction with applicants of LIG and EWS housing projects. The banks and financial institutions do not provide finance to the people from the informal sector and those having no permanent source of income. There is a need to create some solution to this problem.
