Abstract

The construction of simple, inexpensive, compressed air-operated spraying device which can handle small and large volumes (microliters to milliliters) of TLC visualizing reagents is described in this paper. The device is made from widely available HPLC accessories, including stainless-steel fittings and tubing, and can be used with corrosive liquids with a wide range of viscosity. The spraying module can be loaded with visualizing reagent by use of a syringe or micro-syringe, depending on the volume of working solution needed. A jet of liquid is generated under pressure of 1–2 bar applied to the sprayer module by use of a compressed air line. Use of the sprayer for homogeneous coverage of the TLC plate area and application of samples to the origin of the plate by a band-spraying technique have been demonstrated.
