Abstract

A 9-month-old African American male born to a 17-year-old G1P0 mother at 30 weeks' gestational age presented to the office for an initial well-child visit. His mother reported that her only concern was that he appears very small and has had continued problems with poor weight gain. Per the mother, the infant's previous provider had expressed concerns about the infant's lack of weight gain, but had not made any additional dietary, medical, or referral recommendations. The mother stated that at his last clinic visit at 6 months of age, the infant was below the 3rd percentile for weight.
