Abstract

Iraq is in a unique situation with an high infant mortality rate that has shown an upward trend in past three decades. This work was carried out to study the changes in the prevalence of low birth weigh (LBW) and prematurity among neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of maternity and pediatrics hospital in Diyala governorate (north-east Baghdad) Iraq during the period of sanctions to examine possible effects. Data were collected from a total of 533 neonates admitted to NICU during the period 20th December 1999 to 20th June 2000 regarding the birth weight of the neonates and their mothers. (excerpt)
