Abstract

Adequate housing has been considered internationally as one of the major problems of this century. Not only has each country been trying to solve this problem independently, but also international organizations and institutions have been incorporating their efforts to eradicate and solve housing problems throughout the world. It is unfortunate to see that almost 6580% of the world population live in unsuitable houses, such as those in slums and squatter areas. This relates to a number of factors: the world population; the lack of financial resources; inappropriate utilization of financial and human resources; inadequate planning; decision-makers preferring to develop urban areas other than rural ones; and the urgent priorities in the national plans of certain countries being disregarded. These factors contributing to housing problems throughout the world raise an important question of whether we are able to eliminate or at least prevent such a problem from expanding in the years to come. The writer believes that it will take many years to even lessen the negative effects of this problem on the people of the world.
