Abstract
Summary The frequency equation of Love waves in a homogeneous crust overlying a vertically heterogeneous semi-infinite medium (mantle) has been derived. The mathematical forms of elastic parameters chosen for the semi-infinite medium give an appropriate description of the mantle. A difference of dispersion characteristics in a continuous and heterogeneous mantle from those in a corresponding layered model has been noted. It has been observed that the Love wave dispersion curve for a crust overlying a continuous and heterogeneous mantle having average picture of JeffreysBullen A model gives good agreement to the observational data.
