Abstract

Dr. Seguin is an erudite and learned Peruvian psychiatrist and perhaps the outstanding figure in Latin American medical psychology and psychotherapy. Thus this book was read with high hopes, and laid down with considerable disappointment. Dr. Seguin seeks to discuss the actual curative factors in treatment, and in so doing, analyze the doctor-patient relationship in psychotherapy as a specially instructive paradigm for all forms of human relations as well as for all other doctorpatient relationships. This relation he labels the psychotherapeutic Eros. He believes that psychotherapy modifies through the medium of a corrective emotional experience, and that the emotional relationship between doctor and patient is its fundamental basis. In a scholarly fashion he reviews the current psychoanalytic, psychotherapeutic, philosophical, and existential literature, defining and describing various kinds of feelings and interpersonal relationships. He describes the psychotherapeutic Eros as free from authority or any tendency
