Abstract
In the vault of the great hall of the Barberini palace in Rome Pietro da Cortona crowned his fresco of Divine Providence with a glamorous variant of the family coat of arms (figure 1).1 The three bees of the stemma are circled by the laurel of Urban's personal impresa and surmounted by the papal keys and tiara. Each of these giant symbols is supported by a sturdy figure, variously personifying Love (cherubs), Rome, Religion, and the Theological Virtues. This sacred heraldry is depicted in an oval formation that dominates the fresco by virtue of its size, declaring itself to be the culminating, and/or, originating point of signification.2
