Abstract

Abstract The use of Material Requirement Planning (MRP) for planning and control of cellular (Group Technology based) production systems is an approach to improve batch manufacturing. Specifically a single cycle MRP system called Period Batch Control (PBC) was suggested as an appropriate model for scheduling this type of production system. The production/operations management literature lacks a study of the performance of multi-cycles MRP systems employing the traditional lot-sizing technique in a cellular environment. This paper presents a model of a cellular production system and a heuristic lot-sizing procedure which is based on the trade off between set-up cost and inventory carrying cost for such systems controlled by MRP.
