Abstract

Charge transfer between He + ions and molecules of nitrogen and oxygen has been investigated in a crossed beam experiment within the energy range 3–600 eV. Interpolation between these data and the 300°K results of afterglow measurements is made to provide cross sections for these processes at collision energies pertinent to the Earth's upper atmosphere. The results so obtained are in marked disagreement with those inferred from atmospheric data.
