Abstract
Summary Investigations were carried out under simulated in use conditions to determine the loss of chloroform from Magnesium Trisilicate Mixtures manufactured using Chloroform Water Double Strength, Chloroform Emulsion and Chloroform Spirit. Magnesium Trisilicate Mixture B.P.C. showed a loss of 33–40% of the initial chloroform content after 140 × 10 ml aliquots had been removed from a single container. Mixtures manufactured using Chloroform Spirit and Emulsion had higher initial values of chloroform content, also the chloroform remained in solution longer than in the B.P.C. mixtures. A survey of hospital manufactured Magnesium Trisilicate Mixtures showed that there are difficulties in manufacturing mixtures that contain the correct chloroform content. Mixtures from 22 hospitals were analysed of which three contained the expected concentration of chloroform.
