Abstract

Considered as one aspect of the task of individuation, acknowledging the impermanence of life is recognized as a pivotal component of an individual’s conscious relationship with a transcendent meaning. The death of a loved one brings the painful finality of physical life into sharp focus; the emotionally shattering ordeals of grief follow the mythological motif of the night sea journey, where the ego is confronted by the archetypal elements of the collective unconscious. The magnitude of the author’s suffering in grieving multiple losses possessed a numinous quality, and it is his hope that the exploration of the vast territory of grief and mourning in this article may be of help to those who seek the soulful path in life.
