Abstract

ABSTRACT This article examines loss and grief issues involved in addiction and recovery. Tracing first the role that unresolved grief can play as a precursor to substance abuse and addiction, the author then explores aspects of grief that are a part of the disease and recovery process for both the addict and the family system of the addict. Although little has been written about grief as it relates to addiction, it is a major factor for all who are affected by the disease. Treatment programs and twelve step groups need to be aware of this, and be sensitive to the need for the “grief work,” of both the addicted and their families.
