Abstract

Objective: to analyze the payment received by nurses in autonomous communities of Northern Spain (Asturias, Cantabria, Castille and Leon, the Basque Country, Galicia and La Rioja) compared between them and with the national average salary. Method: a transversal descriptive study based on data obtained from documentary sources: official bulletins from 2017 and the Annual Wage Structure Survey from the year 2016. For this calculation, a typical nurse profile was established (hospitalization nurse, three-year seniority, in a rotation including five nights per month, a daily and a night holiday). Descriptive statistic indexes were conducted (mean and standard deviation). Results: the average monthly gross salary for Nursing was 2,376.88 €; the Basque Country is the community with the highest payment (an average 521.21 € above the rest). The average monthly salary of hospitalization nurses in Northern Spain was superior to the overall national average salary (= 2.3 77 € vs. 1.878 €).Conclusions: differences are found between autonomous communities; however, this must be confirmed by future analyses including other nursing profiles and variables, as well as adjusting the differences based on the cost of living in different regions.
