Abstract

Among drawing masters of all times Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec clearly stands out. His sketches, posters, drawings and paintings on cardboard still keep open mouthed all those who deals with graphic art. This brief essay is about the portrait which appears so prominent in Lautrec’s work, from the deep study of the ten paintings he made of his favourite model Carmen Gaudin. We offer a new approach about the datation of these portraits and a possible solution to the fact of her apparent shyness to show her whole face.
