Abstract

The present article is an overview of the main catechisms which where taught and published in Latín America during the pre-hispanic period. Based on the studies made by Mons. Dr. Juan G. Durán, the article presents the main instruments used for the catechization of the continental Indians. From the use of catechisms with images, to the primitive writings that carne from the experience of the missionaries, to those that were a result of the sessions and regulations of the provincial councils and diocesan synods which were held in Lima, México and Bogotá, up to the end of the Hispanic period.
