Abstract
Non-proprietary drug names are common nouns. As such, they require the use of a definite article in Spanish. However, there is a trend to omit the article before drug names in scientific texts written in Spanish, as well as in translations, such as the summaries of product characteristics published by EMA (European Medicines Agency). Dropping the article in these cases is against Spanish grammar correctness. The correct usage can be found in the Spanish Ortografía from Real Academia Española and in several style guides. It is also recorded extensively in reference textbooks; thus, it is the usage that should be promoted in the medical and pharmaceutical sector.
