Abstract
In the first part of this article the author summarizes the essential characteristics of mystical Christian experience: a perception of the Ego as inherent to being and of God as transcendent; a feeling of the presence ofGod, of human passivity and divine free gift; the prophetic value of mysticism and the step from an experience which is beyond words to the expression of that experience. Moreover, he refers to the profound significance of the appearance of mystics in history. In the second part, he studies the theme of peace in some of the more significant mystics from the 14 t h to 16 t h centuries: St. Francis of Asisi, St. Brigid of Sweden, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Joan of Arc, St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross. Each of them offers experience and doctrine of very distinct types. And, on the whole, the author believes that this can be the key to understanding other mystics.
