Abstract
The object of our study was the analysis of motivational differences for soccer practice, based on the age and competitive level of the players. We studied 216 players between the ages of 10 and 23 years, who completed the Spanish version of “Participation Motivation Inventory” of Gill, Gross, & Huddleston (1983). The study shows a valid factor structure to ascertain the reasons for participation in sport. Generally, the reasons for sports are mainly those relating to intrinsic motivation and achievement in all categories with out significant differences and to a lesser extent with extrinsic variables that do vary significantly depending on the category and level of competition. Coaches must plan training with a motivational aim through enjoyed and competitive real games.
