Abstract

This investigation is dedicated to understanding the structure and dynamics of the collection of the tax of 3$500 réis, which was levied on slaves from Costa da Mina, and was applied to the payroll of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe, when this tax was submitted to the contract system. The sources that support this research are the renderings of the Salvador customs accounts of the income from the tax on slaves coming from Costa da Mina, keeping by the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino and made available in the Projeto Resgate Barão do Rio Branco. By analyzing them following the methods of quantitative and serial history, it was possible to reconstruct the current account of that tax; the volume of slaves landing in Salvador; the morbidity rate in the career from São Tomé and Príncipe to Salvador.
