Abstract
The paper reflects on the relationship between democracy and representation. It opposes the democratic vision of Rousseau to the works of Hobbes, Locke and Sieyes. For this philosophers is essential the representation mechanism for expressing the will of the people. The text analyzes linkage of the concept of representation with the modern concepts of power, legitimacy and sovereignty and its connection with modern constitutions.
