Abstract

This book takes advantage of the latest scholarship and many documentary sources not used by previous biographers to provide an accurate summary of the career of one of the most neglected figures in nineteenth-century English history. This work stresses his contribution toward the coming of democracy and religious liberty, as well as reform of criminal law, police and prisons, free trade, factory legislation, education, and colonial self-government.
