He received his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures from Columbia University. His research interests are in the areas of global contemporary art, contemporary Iranian and Middle Eastern art, postcolonial theory, and ethics and politics of readership, translation, and interpretation. Torshizi is a former fellow at Freie Universität Berlin's Cluster of Excellence.
