Abstract

Lev Tolstoy’s last novella Hadji Murat is set against the backdrop of the fierce war between Russia and the Caucasus Mountains' people in the mid-nineteenth century, and focuses on Murat's life after defection to Russia. Tolstoy explores the relationship between the burdock flower and Russian ethnic, historical, and cultural factors.
