Abstract

Background: Anemia has been reported to be a frequent condition among patients (pts) with chronic heart failure (CHF). The pathogenesis of anemia in CHF is multifactorial. We evaluated the prevalence of hemodilution and its contribution to pathogenesis of anemia in hospitalized pts with advanced and mild-to-moderate CHF. Methods: We examined the 345 consecutive pts with CHF. The age of the study population was 70±11 years. Study pts were divided into two groups in relation to presence or absence of peripheral edema and hepatomegaly.
