Abstract

Anyone who has taught an introductory course in geophysics to non‐geophysics students has faced the challenge of finding an appropriate text. At one end of the spectrum of choices are the classic exploration‐oriented texts written for applied geophysics courses. These texts, while good choices for students destined for the oil and mining industries, are either lacking in critical information required by students interested in the upper 10 meters of the Earth's crust, or are much too quantitative for the non‐geophysics major. A few authors have extended the audience to include those interested in shallow subsurface investigations. Some of these books, however, lack a comprehensive treatment of surveying methods, or assume a background beyond the level that can be reasonably expected from this fraction of applied geophysics students.
