Abstract
How do international trade and other transaction flows impact the evolving regional integration system within East Asia? Since the creation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in 1992, and its expansion to include China by 2010 (CAFTA), East Asian intra-regional trade and investment linkages are liable to be impacted significantly, creating additional integration that might not have occurred otherwise. Increasing intra-regional trade and investment, catalyzed in part by the formation of AFTA and the run-up to CAFTA, have the possibility of shifting the core of global economic growth and stability from the developed West to the developing East.
