Abstract
<P>This month’s issue of <cite>Psychiatric Annals</cite>, guest edited by Dr. Jose Yaryura-Tobias, is focused on infectious diseases that are known or hypothesized to result in neuropsychiatric syndromes. Provided here is valuable information on infectious processes that can masquerade as “functional” psychiatric syndromes. In addition, interesting data are presented concerning various autoimmune mechanisms underlying some cases of schizophrenia. It reminds me of the fairly recent finding of the role of infectious agents in gastric or duodenal ulcer disease. Who would have thought that? And what about the possibility of chronic infectious origins of coronary artery disease?</P>
