Abstract

For Haitian physician Marie Marcelle Deschamps, COVID-19 is just the latest in a never-ending series of challenges. As the director of a large nonprofit health organization, she was already stretched thin by the struggle to provide medical care in one of the poorest countries on Earth, where political instability, natural disasters, and widespread poverty have all taken their toll. But Deschamps has drawn on her training, including a fellowship in Anthony Fauci9s lab at the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and her experience as a veteran of Haiti9s battle against HIV/AIDS to hit the current pandemic head on—showing in the process why she9s an inspiration to many.
