Abstract

The deep-reading LWD resistivity tools are used to detect resistivity ahead and around the tool. The tools are long because of the long transmitter receiver spacing. The tools can look deeper around the tool than ahead of the tool. We examined three types of LWD tools that can look farther ahead of the tool with shorter transmitter-receiver spacing. They are the transient Electromagnetic (EM) tool with the magnetic dipole source and magnetic field sensors, the continuous wave EM tool with the electric dipole source and magnetic field sensors, and the continuous wave EM tool with the magnetic dipole source and electric field sensors.
