Scholastic, 2008 32p ISBN 978-0-545-08540-3 $16.99 M Gr. 2–4 The Hatkoffs return to their documentation of nature (see Owen & Mzee, BCCB 5/06, and Little Knut, BCCB 12/07), here telling the story of a dramatic event in a group of mountain gorillas. In one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s national parks, two rangers realized that a baby gorilla, Miza, was missing from her family group; though the rangers searched carefully, her return was apparently due to the efforts of her tirelessly devoted gorilla father. The text here seems to be hastily cobbled together, complete with printing artifacts and a hefty example each of typo and spelling error, and the story is told confusingly (though it initially describes the emergency as Miza’s disappearance, it seems that she and her mother, who was never found, went missing together) and abruptly (the meat is covered in about three pages, with the rest of the text devoted to a general chronicle of the life of mountain gorillas and the work of the park rangers). There are a few interesting tidbits about the gorillas and their existence, and Greste’s photographs include some arresting portraits of the gorilla group (though stodgy borders mar the design). Overall, though, this is a disappointing outing in an attractive and well-meaning package, and audiences will find more to relate to in the previous Hatkoff outings. A pronunciation guide is included on the copyright page; end matter includes an overview of threats to mountain gorillas and descriptions of several organizations helping mountain gorillas.
