Abstract

Rates of malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, have trebled in under-35s since the late 1970s in Britain. Sunburn signals damage to the DNA inside skin cells, and over time this damage can develop into skin cancer. It is therefore important that children and young people are aware of the risks of sunburn and that an effective whole-school sun protection policy is in place. This article looks at skin cancer, risk factors and effective sun protection.
