Abstract

The Basque health care system is at present a national service, based on the principles of universal care and equity, similar to those found in countries such as the United Kingdom or Sweden. It was modelled on the British National Health Service (NHS), and on objective health indicators it can be seen to provide good value for money, and is at least as efficient as the NHS. However, as in the United Kingdom, the Basque Health Service is now going through a process of change, change that very much resembles that undergone by the NHS. This paper gives an overview of the Basque situation and describes the proposed new Basque Health Service, changes which were recently approved by the Basque parliament.
