Abstract

C V Reis and colleagues (June 5, p 1942)1 suggest that the bleeding syndrome induced by contact with the caterpillar Lonomia obliqua was the first report of this haemorrhagic diathesis. They subsequently mention L achelous but fail to refer to published studies. We described2 a severe bleeding syndrome induced by contact with caterpillars, later identified as the larvae of L achelous. We have since published various reports about the clinical syndrome induced by contact with the caterpillars and the identification of the substances present in the caterpillar's biological fluids that are responsible for the disease.
