Long‐term water quality changes in ramsey lake (Sudbury, Canada) as revealed through paleolimnology

Abstract

Abstract Ramsey Lake is a large, circumneutral lake in the center of the City of Sudbury that has been subjected to severe environmental degradation due to the local mining and smelting activities. We use paleolimnological methods to show that water quality has changed since the beginning of this century, but that most of the changes are related to watershed disturbances and eutrophication. This is in contrast to many other Sudbury lakes that have acidified since the 1800s.
